Claude for classic Outlook

Windows ships two different Outlooks, and only one of them lets an AI assistant work inside your mailbox. Here is how to tell them apart, how to switch back to the right one in a single click, and how to connect Claude Desktop to it without admin rights or an IT ticket.

Which Outlook do I have?

Look at the top right of your Outlook window.

Classic Outlook is the desktop application installed with Office and Microsoft 365. If Office is on your machine, classic Outlook is already there, even when the new Outlook is the one that opens by default.

Why Claude needs classic Outlook

The new Outlook is essentially the web version of Outlook wrapped in a desktop window. It does not expose the local automation interface that desktop applications use to talk to each other on Windows.

Classic Outlook does expose it. That single difference is what makes a purely local connection possible: Claude can read, sort, write and file inside your mailbox from your own machine, without your email being sent anywhere, without an Azure application to register and without a Microsoft Graph permission to request from your administrator.

What that changes for you

No cloud connector in the middle, no admin consent screen, no IT ticket. The content of your email never reaches a third-party server — only your licence is verified.

Switch back to classic Outlook in one click

  1. Open Outlook and look at the top right of the window.
  2. Turn off the “New Outlook” toggle.
  3. Outlook restarts on the classic interface. Nothing is installed, nothing is deleted, and no email is lost — both versions read the same mailbox and can coexist.

No toggle at all, and no classic Outlook on the machine? Download it free from Microsoft. It installs in your own Windows session and never asks for an admin password.

Connect Claude to classic Outlook

Once you are on classic Outlook, the connection itself takes about two minutes.

  1. Install Outlink. The installer checks your machine, sets up whatever is missing and writes the Claude Desktop configuration for you — all inside your own session, with no admin rights.
  2. Enter your licence key. It arrives by email on purchase and is validated online.
  3. Authorise the tools. Restart Claude Desktop, send the first-run message from the guide, and answer “Always allow” when Claude asks for permission for outlink.

From then on you can ask in plain English: summarise my last 10 emails, reply to ACME that I confirm Thursday, set up a check-in tomorrow at 2 pm. The user guide lists everything Claude can do inside your mailbox.

Outlink and the official Claude add-in are not the same thing

Anthropic ships an official Claude add-in for Outlook. It targets a different setup, so the two rarely compete for the same user.

If your organisation has already rolled out the official add-in and you are happy on the new Outlook, use it. If you are on classic Outlook, or you cannot get anything approved by IT, Outlink is built for exactly that situation.

Common questions

Does Claude work with the new Outlook?

Not through a local connection. The new Outlook does not expose the automation interface that classic Outlook provides, so a local tool cannot act inside it. Switching the toggle back to classic takes one click and costs you nothing.

Which Outlook versions are supported?

Classic Outlook for Windows as shipped with Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019 and Office 2016. Outlook on the web, the new Outlook and Outlook for Mac are not supported.

Do I lose email by going back to classic?

No. Both versions read the same mailbox and coexist on the same machine. Switching back installs nothing and deletes nothing.

Do I need admin rights?

No. There is no Azure application to register, no Graph permission to request and no admin consent to obtain — so nothing to ask IT for.

Claude still does not see Outlook. What now?

Check that classic Outlook is actually running, and that Claude Desktop was fully quit and restarted after installation — closing the window is not enough, quit it from the notification area. The support page walks through the rest.
